Check Raising
A check raise is when you check with the intention of raising on
the same betting round. Check raising
is sometimes better than just betting a hand. It depends on the
type of players to your left. If you have some very aggressive players
to your left, a check raise can tone down their aggressive
style.
A check raise works by either driving out your opponents, or by
inducing them to put money in a pot when you have a very
strong hand. Check raising can also slow down an agressive players
betting, as they are afraid of being check raised by you. It is
one of your weapons against aggressive players.
The down side of a check raise is that others to your left may
just check. Then, you have given everyone a free card. Free cards
can help you opponents beat your strong starting hand.
