Calculating Odds

When determining whether to bet on your hand, it is wise to know the odds of your hand improving. This, fortunately, is fairly straighforward.

Calculating Odds
In this exampel, you need one more heart to make your hand. There are 9 outs(cards that improve your hand) left in the deck and there are 47 cards not showing. Your Odds of making a flush on the next card is 9/(47-9), or 1 out of 4, approximately.
If there is $20.00 in the pot, and it will cost you $4.00 to call, you are getting the correct odds to call. On the other hand, if there is only $12.00 in the pot, you are not getting correct pot odds to call.

For ease of calculating Pot Odds, we have compiled this list of Odds Against Making your Draw:

Flush Draw with 2 Overcards 2.1 to 1
Flush Draw with 1 Overcard 3 to 1
Flush Draw 4 to 1
Open Ended Straight Draw 5 to 1
Two Overcards 7 to 1
Gut Shot Draw(Need 1 Card) 11 to 1
Match Pair in Hand 23 to 1

This chart will help you determine if you are getting proper odds to call a bet. For example, if you have an open ended straight draw, you are a 5 to 1 underdog to make your straight on the next card. If there is $12.00 in the pot, and it will cost you $2.00 to call, you are getting correct pot odds. If the pot is smaller than $10.00, you are not getting correct odds to call. Use this as a guideline, to help you make better decisions.
