Poker Strategy
The
type of Poker strategy you use depends a great deal upon which type
of game you are playing.
Limit Games
If you are playing in a limit game, or a limit tournament, a lot
of the aggressive high powered strategies will not work. You will
typically have more than two people in the pot. For example, bluffing
and picking up small pots are much more difficult. And if you do
have a hand, you will most likely have to show it on the end. The
tendencies of some players to call with almost any hand means you
must play a much tighter game in limit poker. In other words, you
will have to consistently show the best hand to come out ahead at
the end of the night. You really have to play your cards, not so
much the player.
No Limit
In no limit games, you have many more tools at your disposal. You
can play the player, so to speak. When you sense weakness, you can
pick up the pot with any cards. In no limit, it's usually one or
two people in the pot. You can be more creative. It's not always
what you have in your hand, it's what you think your opponent has.
You want to catagorize the players in your game. Are they also very
aggressive? Are they very tight conservative players? If you know
their playing style, you can use it against them to pick up pots
when you are in a hand with them. Reraise them, check raise them,
what ever it takes to get them off their game. If everyone at the
table is playing tight, you should loosen up your game. Against
tight players, you can bluff more often. If everyone is playing
loose, you really need to play the better hands. It's almost a contrarian
strategy.
Summary
After playing in both limit and no limit games, you will begin to
develop your playing strategy. The more you play, the better you
will get, and the more you will take home with you. So, shuffle
up and deal.
